Houston’s Alternative to Traditional Driveways: Chip Seal

Many people don’t realize that there is another alternative to cement and asphalt when it comes to repairing an old or worn-out driveway, or even when it comes to pouring a new one altogether: the chip-and-seal method. Installing a new chip seal driveway is a simple process that comes with several benefits. Keep reading to discover what makes this type of driveway such a practical choice!

The Chip-and-Seal Process

Chip-and-seal (also known as “tar-and-chip”) is a method for sealing a driveway that has been used for a long, long time. It is one of the most cost-effective solutions out there, and the way it is created is similar to a traditional driveway. First, a base of gravel is laid on the driveway and then leveled. Once a solid foundation is there, liquid asphalt is poured over to bind the gravel together. For the final step, multiple layers of small stones are layered on top to create a textured, even, and beautiful driveway.

Advantages of a Chip Seal Driveway

Although chip seal driveways on average last only a few years less than a traditional cement driveway, they offer several benefits. If you are building a new home or are renovating your landscaping, chip seal driveways can be customized with various types of stones and colored rocks to complement the aesthetic that you want for your landscaping or home-front. They are also built from recycled material and cost significantly less than what it takes to have pure asphalt paving.

Are you looking to repair or install a new chip seal driveway, or do you just have questions about the process? Talk to one of our dedicated professionals at United Asphalt Paving for more information on how we serve the Houston area.
