Preparing for Asphalt Paving Projects

Before starting any asphalt paving project, it’s important to make sure the right preparations have been made. That way, the paving—and your property—can be set up for success!

Schedule an Inspection With Your Paving Contractor

Step one for any paving project is to set up an inspection. This allows your paving contractor to see the status of your property and determine the size and scope of the project. That way, they’ll be able to accurately estimate the time, materials, and manpower needed to complete the work.

The inspection is also an opportunity for you to state what your goals and expectations are so that you and your contractor can be on the same page. In short, the inspection is essential in order to have clear communication from the get-go.

Create and Communicate Project Plans

Next, your paving contractor needs to draft and share the project plans with the rest of the team. This includes addressing:

  • Scheduling
  • Materials
  • Manpower
  • Traffic management
  • Quality assurance steps

Going over these elements prior to starting work provides the opportunity to catch any issues or discrepancies before they happen. It also ensures that everyone is clear on both the timeline and the expectations for the whole project.

Preparing the Site

If your paving project involves roads or parking areas, a key preparation step is implementing a traffic control plan. This includes putting up signage and/or arranging cones, barriers, or other markers to direct traffic around the paving site.

Other preparations will depend on the type of paving project in question. For example, if your paving company is going to install an asphalt overlay, they’ll need to first remove any existing paving that’s cracked. If they’re sealcoating the surface, they’ll need to make sure all debris and weeds are removed before starting.

Once all of this is done, though, you’re good to go! Your asphalt paver can begin and you can look forward to a beautiful and complete paved property.
